New Mexico +8 1.1* Free Play
This one will be in New Mexico’s own back yard which is rare for a bowl game. Arizona only beat 1 team with a winning record this year and lost to their hated rival in Arizona State. It was a disappointing year for the Wildcats at 6-6 and injuries played a factor, but I don’t see them too thrilled about this game. New Mexico on the other hand hasn’t been in a bowl game in quite some time and have to be pumped for this game.
The match up also favors New Mexico who runs the wish bone attack and relies heavily on the ability to successfully run the ball. Arizona’s defense is not very good, although they’ll get a bit healthier they are still going to have issues stopping this running game. They allowed 26 TD’s on the year, gave up 200+ yards six times and allowed over 5 yards per carry on the road. This New Mexico squad improved greatly as the season went on under head coach Davies and there is a lot to like form a team that won 3 of their last 4 games including games against Boise State on the road and Air Force at home. I like the fact that they have been great in the red zone allowing 40% success rate on TD opportunities and I think that keeps them in this game as Arizona won’t get a TD every trip down there.
